  • Tie rod ends are ball-and-socket joints with a threaded shaft
  • They transfer steering input from the rack to the wheels

Types:

Inner Tie Rod Ends:

  • Attach directly to the steering rack
  • Usually hidden behind the steering rack boot
  • Connect to the outer tie rod ends via an adjustable sleeve

Outer Tie Rod Ends:

  • Connect to the steering knuckle/spindle
  • Visible from wheel well
  • Have a castle nut and split pin for safety

Common Starlet models:

  • EP80/EP90 series (1990s models – 1.3L)
  • EP91/EP95 (Glanza, 1.3L)
  • Most had manual steering (non-power steering)

Typical specifications:

  • Thread size: M12 or M14 (model dependent)
  • Ball joint design with rubber dust boot
  • Taper fit to steering knuckle
  • Sold individually (not in pairs)

Signs of wear:

  • Loose/clunky steering
  • Uneven tire wear
